Acció Feminista calls for abortion reform in Andorra and announces rally: “Nothing has changed”

Acció Feminista has called a rally for Monday, September 28, at 6.30 pm in Parc de la Mola, marking International Safe Abortion Day. The organisation aims to highlight the lack of progress and demand that political commitments lead to concrete changes, according to RTVA.

The announcement comes with criticism of the government and parliamentary groups, which the association accuses of failing to use this summer’s Criminal Code reform to advance the decriminalisation of abortion.

“Despite the government’s promises, we are still stuck in the same pattern,” said Maricel, a member of Acció Feminista, describing the legislative amendment as a “golden opportunity” to address the issue.

Criticism over a missed opportunity for abortion reform

Acció Feminista has questioned why political promises have failed to produce the measures it is demanding. “Nothing has changed,” Maricel said, expressing the organisation’s frustration at the lack of progress during the Criminal Code reform process.

The rally aims to take this demand back onto the streets and put pressure on institutions to respond to calls for abortion to be decriminalised.

Andorran Women’s Association demands political and institutional action

The Andorran Women’s Association (ADA) is also calling for progress. Its president, Elvira Geli, defended women’s right to make decisions about their own bodies and urged, at a minimum, the decriminalisation of abortion in the three circumstances advocated by the association.

Geli expressed frustration at the gap between announcements and results. “All we keep hearing is words and more words,” she said, lamenting the lack of visible progress.

The ADA president stressed that finding an institutional solution is the responsibility of political leaders and those working in the legal and diplomatic fields. In her view, associations must continue to voice their demands, but responsibility for breaking the deadlock rests with the institutions.

Monday’s mobilisation renews the call for abortion decriminalisation to move beyond an unfulfilled promise and become an effective legislative reform.
