Pintat says DA needs a new name, a new structure and openness to a coalition to win again
The former prime minister also warns that a ‘no’ vote in the association agreement referendum would be a major blow to Xavier Espot
Former Prime Minister Albert Pintat believes Demòcrates must restructure if it wants to win the next election.
Speaking on RTVA’s Avui serà un bon dia programme on Thursday, he argued that this renewal should include a change of name, a new structure and a willingness to form a coalition.
Pintat linked the need to transform the party to the toll of holding a dominant position for many years. “When a party has been a dominant force for so many years, it is natural for restructuring to take place,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the party would make the changes he considers necessary to remain electorally competitive. “I trust the party to change its name and structure and open itself up to a coalition. If they want to win, that is what they will have to do,” he said.
A warning over the association agreement referendum
The former prime minister also assessed the potential consequences for Xavier Espot of a vote against the association agreement with the European Union.
Pintat warned that a ‘no’ victory would have a significant impact on the prime minister: “If the result is no, they will suffer greatly, and he will be very unhappy, that is certain.”
Beyond the personal repercussions, he suggested that public rejection would expose failings in the process. “If the people were to say no, something would have been handled very badly,” he concluded.
