Andorra and San Marino prepare to sign EU association agreement between late September and mid-October
The signing itself would therefore not mean that the agreement immediately enters into force
Andorra and San Marino are entering the final stage of the process towards signing their association agreement with the European Union, which could take place between late September and mid-October, according to reports from San Marino.
The European dossier is expected to regain a central position on the political agenda after the summer break, as both microstates seek to conclude a negotiation process that has lasted for years.
In San Marino, the agreement with the EU will be one of the main topics of political debate at the end of August. The traditional Festa dell’Amicizia, organized by the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese, will dedicate its opening day, August 21, to discussing the association agreement with Brussels.
The signing is getting closer
Although no official date has yet been confirmed, reports from San Marino point to a possible signing between late September and mid-October.
The agreement would involve Andorra and San Marino and represent a major step forward in the relationship between the two microstates and the European Union.
For Andorra, the signing would come after a lengthy political and institutional process that has generated intense domestic debate over the potential consequences of closer integration with the EU.
A busy political calendar
Political activity is set to resume after the summer with a packed agenda, but the European dossier will be one of the main priorities.
In Andorra, the EU issue remains one of the country's most important political and social debates, particularly with the future ratification process expected to follow the signing.
The signing itself would therefore not mean that the agreement immediately enters into force. Instead, it would mark the beginning of a new stage in which the necessary ratification procedures would have to be completed.
The final stage after years of negotiations
A possible signing between September and October would put Andorra and San Marino at one of the most important moments in their European integration process.
After years of negotiations with Brussels, both microstates are now preparing to conclude the agreement and subsequently face the political and institutional debate that will determine their future relationship with the European Union.
For now, the final signing date has not yet been officially announced.
