Spanish nationals account for most departures from Andorra as active temporary work permits rise 263.9%

Andorra recorded 275 departures in its immigration register between March and May 2026, with Spanish nationals accounting for 52.4% of the total. 

Meanwhile, the number of temporary work permits in force reached 1,914 as of 31 May, an increase of 263.9% compared with a year earlier, according to figures released by the Department of Statistics on 10 September.

The sharp rise in temporary permits reflects the extension of the 2025–2026 winter season quotas, which meant substantially more authorisations remained valid at the end of May than at the same point the previous year.

Spanish nationals account for more than half of registered departures

Spanish citizens represented 52.4% of the 275 departures recorded during the quarter. They were followed by people classified under “other nationalities”, at 31.6%, Portuguese nationals, at 8.4%, and French nationals, at 7.6%.

By permit type, 212 departures involved holders of residence and work permits, accounting for 77.1% of the total. A further 47 involved residence permit holders, representing 17.1%.

Andorra has more than 43,200 active residence and work permits

As of 31 May 2026, Andorra had 43,241 residence and work permits in force, up 1.7% year on year. This figure should not be interpreted as a count solely of foreign employees, as it also includes self-employed workers.

Assuming self-employed workers account for approximately 3,000 authorisations, the remaining figure would be around 40,200. This is an indicative calculation, since the published statistical summary does not break these permits down between employees and self-employed workers.

Meanwhile, 10,359 people held residence permits, an increase of 3.2% compared with the same date in 2025. The number of cross-border work permits also rose, reaching 1,984, up 4.1% year on year.

Temporary work permits rise following winter quota extension

The largest increase was recorded in temporary work permits, which reached 1,914, up 263.9% year on year. The Department of Statistics attributes this growth to the extension of the winter season quotas.

Temporary work authorisations for foreign companies, meanwhile, totalled 209, an annual increase of 3.5%.

These figures refer to permits that remained in force at the end of May, rather than new authorisations granted during the three-month reporting period.

Argentinians lead the “other nationalities” category

Within the group classified as “other nationalities”, Argentinian nationals held 4,232 active authorisations at the end of May, followed by Colombians with 2,149 and Peruvians with 1,150. These figures cover all permit categories included in the statistics.

Argentinian nationals held 3,031 residence and work permits, representing 25.3% of that permit category within the “other nationalities” group.

They also held 871 temporary permits, accounting for 50.6% of temporary authorisations within the same group.
