Concern in Pas de la Casa over machetes among suspected smugglers

La Veu Lliure has obtained images showing a tense confrontation between several individuals apparently linked to tobacco smuggling in the area around Pas de la Casa. The footage shows one man carrying what appears to be a machete, another holding what appears to be a knife, while a third individual moves away from the confrontation.

The incident took place near routes commonly used by people allegedly involved in transporting tobacco on foot across the border. The individuals visible in the footage appear to be of Maghreb origin, although their identities and their specific connection to tobacco smuggling have not been independently confirmed by this newspaper.

Several residents have told La Veu Lliure that they do not believe the situation has improved sufficiently despite the measures introduced by the Government to tackle smuggling around the border.

The incident also raises concerns about the possibility of violent confrontations between individuals involved in the smuggling networks, particularly in areas close to residential and commercial zones.

Smugglers continue using secondary routes

The confrontation comes as the Government's measures to tackle tobacco smuggling continue to face difficulties.

Last year, the Executive launched a crackdown plan aimed at making it more difficult for smugglers to operate around the border. Among the measures implemented was the obstruction of paths and trails used to transport tobacco on foot, including the placement of rocks and other obstacles along some routes.

Despite these measures, images obtained by this newspaper indicate that secondary paths continue to be used by individuals allegedly involved in transporting tobacco across the border.

The continued use of these routes, combined with the appearance of what seem to be a machete and a knife during a confrontation, is adding to the concerns expressed by some residents in Pas de la Casa.

Calls for greater control

Residents who have contacted La Veu Lliure are calling for greater surveillance not only at the main border crossing but also along the secondary paths and trails used to move tobacco on foot.

The footage obtained by this newspaper once again highlights the difficulties faced by the authorities in tackling smuggling around Pas de la Casa, while the apparent presence of bladed weapons among individuals allegedly linked to the activity has added a new source of concern for the local population.
