Pirineu Viu links Andorra-La Seu Airport expansion to housing crisis
The group claims new international routes will increase pressure on the housing market
Pirineu Viu has criticised the expansion of international connections at Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell Airport, arguing that it could worsen the housing crisis affecting the Pyrenees.
The organisation claims that the new routes reinforce an economic model focused on tourism and visitors with high purchasing power, although it has not provided data demonstrating a direct link between the airport’s expansion and rising property prices.
The group is referring to the routes announced to Paris-Orly, Nice, Lyon, Nantes, Madrid and Mallorca, which will expand the airport’s connections with national and international destinations.
According to Pirineu Viu, the initiative reflects the Andorran Government’s aim of increasing visitor numbers and boosting tourism. The organisation argues that this strategy could place additional pressure on the property market and make it more difficult for workers and residents to find affordable housing in the Pyrenees.
“While facilities are being provided for more and more visitors with high purchasing power to arrive in Andorra, working people are finding it increasingly difficult to find somewhere to live”, the group said.
The organisation warns of tourism-driven property pressure
Pirineu Viu also claims that the growth of tourism could encourage property speculation and contribute to the displacement of workers from the region, particularly those dependent on the rental market.
However, the organisation’s argument does not consider the possibility that increased economic activity could attract private investment and encourage the construction of new homes, potentially expanding the available housing supply.
The group is calling for any expansion of airport activity to be accompanied by measures guaranteeing access to housing and preventing tourism growth from taking place at the expense of the resident population.
Pirineu Viu believes that the debate over the airport should not focus solely on passenger numbers or the opening of new routes, but should also address their potential social and territorial impact.
So far, however, the organisation has not presented studies or figures quantifying the specific impact of the new connections on housing prices in Andorra or elsewhere in the Pyrenees.
