Police arrested a 40-year-old man in the parish of La Massana on Sunday around midday on suspicion of a public health offence, after finding 45 5-milligram methadone hydrochloride tablets in his possession.

Officers were called by a woman who said she had found several medications at her home belonging to her partner and suspected they could be narcotic substances.

When officers arrived, the woman, who was reportedly in a state of considerable distress, handed them 10 blister packs containing a total of 45 methadone tablets.

The man was questioned about the medication and its possession, but failed to provide a coherent explanation for why he had the tablets.

Following the relevant checks, police confirmed that the substance was methadone hydrochloride, a synthetic opioid that requires a medical prescription and whose possession outside authorised circumstances can constitute a public health offence.

The man was subsequently arrested. The arrest was one of four made by Andorran police over the weekend.
