Spain seeks to reopen debate on Catalan’s official EU status after more than a year
Sánchez’s government wants the issue included in the September 22 meeting
The Spanish government has requested that official EU status for Catalan, Basque and Galician be discussed again at the General Affairs Council meeting on September 22.
The request, submitted on Wednesday, aims to bring the issue back before European affairs ministers after more than a year without discussions in this format.
According to ACN, Pedro Sánchez’s government has formally asked for the item to be included in the meeting in Brussels. However, the request does not guarantee that the issue will make it onto the agenda.
Ireland has yet to finalise the agenda
Sources from Ireland’s rotating presidency of the Council of the EU confirmed that they had taken note of Spain’s request. The agenda will be finalised over the coming days.
It therefore remains uncertain whether ministers will resume discussions on September 22. The request also does not mean that a vote on official status for the three languages has been agreed.
European affairs ministers last discussed official EU status for Catalan in July 2025. If the Irish presidency adds the issue to the agenda, it will return to this ministerial forum after a gap of more than a year.
