US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, its lowest level in polling by The Washington Post, ABC News and Ipsos.

Sixty-six per cent of Americans disapprove of his performance, including 52% who strongly disapprove. The figure is below any recorded during his first term, according to the poll.

The survey, conducted from 9 to 13 October among 2,545 US adults, also puts approval of Trump’s handling of the economy at a new low: just 28% approve, while 70% disapprove.

Inflation and the rising cost of living are weighing on the White House’s ratings, amid higher petrol prices and the war with Iran.

Democrats lead in congressional voting intentions

The decline comes two weeks before the 3 November midterm elections. In the same poll, Democratic candidates lead in voting intentions for the House of Representatives, with 50% support among registered voters, compared with 42% for Republicans. Among voters most likely to turn out, the Democratic lead widens to eight points, with 52% against 44%.

Other recent polls also put Trump’s approval at low levels, although their figures vary according to sample and methodology. A Pew Research poll puts it at 30%, while a Fox News poll places it at 36%.
