Firefighters declare La Querola fire extinguished
Work now turns to assessing the damaged structures and determining the cause of the blaze, which burned through around 22,000 square metres
The fire at La Querola in Ordino was declared extinguished on Wednesday, after firefighters put out the remaining pockets of fire inside the residential complex.
With the firefighting operation complete, the next steps will be to assess the condition of the worst-affected structures and establish the cause of the blaze, according to RTVA.
Throughout the day, crews tackled pockets of fire still burning inside two buildings. The situation was under control by mid-morning, and the fire was declared extinguished several hours later.
The blaze burned through approximately 10,000 square metres of residential space and 12,000 square metres of parking areas.
Structural assessments and investigation still pending
Technical assessments of the buildings will be crucial to determining the extent of the damage and whether the complex can be restored. Rebuilding remains a possibility, but will depend largely on the amounts insurers are able to cover.
The process is expected to be lengthy, as investigators must first establish where and how the fire started. No working hypothesis has yet been established, although firefighters acknowledged that they have some suspicions without providing further details.
Regarding the wooden cladding, the fire service director said that no protective treatment would have been sufficient to preserve it against the blaze.
Some vehicles in the garages were saved
Firefighters also confirmed that high-end vehicles were stored in two or three enclosed parking units within the buildings. Some were saved, although the number of vehicles damaged has not been specified.
