Catalonia accepts land for a new public care home in La Seu d’Urgell
The city council has donated a plot of almost 4,900 square metres
The Government of Catalonia on Tuesday, 27 October, approved the free transfer of the land where a future public care home for older people in La Seu d’Urgell will be built.
The decision is another administrative step towards creating a facility to strengthen residential care for older people in the Alt Urgell capital and across the region.
The plot, previously owned by the city, was donated by La Seu d’Urgell City Council. It is located at 3 Passeig de l’Horta del Valira.
According to RàdioSeu, the site covers 4,859.22 square metres. It will be used for the new residential centre and the additional facilities needed to operate it.
With the transfer formally accepted, the Catalan Government can continue the administrative procedures required before construction can be put out to tender. The tender is currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
Catalan Government plans to put construction out to tender in early 2027
Accepting the land transfer is a necessary step for the Catalan administration to move ahead with the public care home.
The process allows work to continue on the administrative procedures for the facility, including preparing the construction tender and the steps needed to provide the centre with its planned services and facilities.
Under the current schedule, the tender is expected to be published between January and March 2027, although this will depend on the completion of the relevant administrative procedures.
The tender will be one of the steps before the contract is awarded and construction begins.
The land transfer does not mean work is starting. It allows the project to move towards the contracting stage.
A new public care home for La Seu d’Urgell and Alt Urgell
The future care home is intended to meet the needs of older people in La Seu d’Urgell and other municipalities in Alt Urgell.
The facility is expected to strengthen the region’s public social services network by expanding the residential care available to people who need it.
The project is part of wider efforts to improve care resources in the area and give older people better access to specialist services.
Such facilities are particularly significant in the Pyrenean regions, where distances between municipalities can make some public and health and social care services harder to access.
The new centre will give La Seu d’Urgell a public facility for older people, with the aim of serving residents beyond the city itself.
Project includes 90 residential places and a €17.2 million investment
Under plans previously presented by La Seu d’Urgell City Council, the care home will have 90 residential places in five 18-person living units.
The facility will include 30 double rooms and 30 single rooms, as well as a day centre for up to 40 people and 12 supported apartments.
The complex will have around 10,000 square metres of built space, including residential areas, apartments, communal spaces and care services.
The announced budget is €17.2 million, to be covered by the Catalan Government’s Department of Social Rights.
A long-standing demand in the region
The care home responds to a demand raised for years by social organisations, local representatives and families in La Seu d’Urgell.
Last June, the city council unanimously approved transferring the construction project to the Catalan Government, with support from every municipal group.
At that meeting, Mayor Joan Barrera said the city had only 14 public residential places, with an increase to 27 planned, while the waiting list had topped 80 people. Later, Social Rights and Inclusion Minister Raúl Moreno said construction could begin in 2027, provided the administrative process stayed on schedule.
