Bartumeu sees the next general election as the end of DA’s political cycle
Progressistes-SDP does not plan to field its own candidates at the next general election. The party is calling for a broad political alliance to usher in a new era for the country, according to RTVA, following its congress held on Saturday.
The decision contrasts with the message from Jaume Bartumeu, who sees the next election as marking the end of sixteen years of governments led by Demòcrates per Andorra. The former Head of Government argues that political change is needed, but his party does not intend to contest the election independently.
The ambition to bring the Democrats’ time in government to an end is therefore tied to the proposed alliance, whose potential members and electoral arrangements have yet to be specified.
An alliance inspired by the constitutional consensus
Progressistes-SDP’s proposal seeks to bring together different political perspectives beyond existing party structures. The party takes its inspiration from the consensus that enabled the Constitution to be drafted and approved, advocating a broad forum to address the Principality’s future.
For now, this approach does not amount to the announcement of a confirmed coalition or a joint electoral slate. What is clear is that SDP does not intend to run alone, while proposing a political alternative that requires other participants to take shape.
Bartumeu and the party’s president, Josep Roig, both argue that citizens are tired of politics focused excessively on individuals, party labels and electoral strategies. Both believe the debate should concentrate on projects and concrete proposals to address the country’s problems.
Ten commitments awaiting public release
The congress also approved Andorra 2040, a document developed by Roig that sets out ten commitments covering issues such as housing, dignity at work, safeguarding CASS, the healthcare system, security, growth and economic diversification.
The text received unanimous support from members attending the congress and will be made public in the second half of September. The party presents it as a contribution open to debate.
