Andorra votes at the UN to end the US embargo on Cuba
The resolution received 130 votes in favour, 17 against and 25 abstentions; Spain, France and Portugal also backed it
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba. Andorra voted in favour, alongside 130 other states, including Spain, France and Portugal.
The text, submitted by Cuba, received 17 votes against and 25 abstentions. It invokes principles in the UN Charter, including the sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs, and freedom of trade and navigation.
The vote has become a regular event at the UN: similar resolutions have been adopted 34 times, but the US embargo remains in force. Several other EU states also supported the text, while countries including Italy and the Netherlands abstained.
