Forest fire burns 500 square metres above Canòlich
The fire was caused by a lightning strike that hit the area on Tuesday, August 11, at around 4 p.m.
Firefighters extinguished a forest fire on Thursday that affected around 500 square metres of land in an area above Canòlich, in Sant Julià de Lòria.
Emergency services received several calls at around 11:45 a.m. after people reported seeing a column of smoke rising from the forest. Firefighters deployed a helicopter and a ground crew to the area.
The fire was fully extinguished at around 2:30 p.m., after approximately three hours of work. Crews combined aerial firefighting operations with manual work on the ground to put out the flames and subsequently soak the affected area.
The fire started two days earlier
According to the firefighters' duty officer, the fire mainly affected scrubland, dead low vegetation and some trees, covering an estimated 500 square metres.
The fire was caused by a lightning strike that hit the area on Tuesday, August 11, at around 4 p.m. The lightning is believed to have triggered the fire, although the flames were not detected until Thursday.
Several people alerted emergency services after noticing the column of smoke coming from the wooded area above Canòlich.
Helicopter carried out 23 water drops
During the firefighting operation, the firefighters' helicopter carried out 23 water drops over the affected area, while a ground crew worked manually to contain the fire.
Once the flames had been extinguished, firefighters continued soaking the affected area to prevent any possible flare-ups.
The fire ultimately affected around 500 square metres, with no injuries reported.
