Andorran police have arrested a 40-year-old caregiver in Escaldes-Engordany on suspicion of defrauding a 91-year-old man of more than €130,000 while providing home care services.

The suspect was employed by a home care company and allegedly took advantage of the elderly man's vulnerability and dependency to access his money without authorization.

The arrest took place on Wednesday morning following an order from the Andorran judicial authorities, known as the Batllia, after a police investigation uncovered more than 100 allegedly fraudulent banking transactions between January and June 2026.

According to a police statement released on Thursday, the woman allegedly used the victim's bank cards and checkbook to make purchases, withdraw cash and cash checks using signatures obtained unlawfully.

Suspicious bank transactions discovered by someone close to the victim

The investigation began after someone close to the elderly man alerted the police upon discovering unusually large charges on his bank account.

Officers specializing in financial and property crimes examined the transactions and identified a pattern of suspicious activity allegedly linked to the caregiver.

Investigators found that the money had reportedly been taken through several methods, including card payments, ATM withdrawals and checks.

The suspect is also believed to have obtained the victim's signature unlawfully to cash checks.

In total, police identified more than 100 transactions that allegedly enabled the woman to take over €130,000 from the elderly man's accounts in just six months.

Caregiver investigated for aggravated fraud in Andorra

The 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of committing aggravated fraud, an offense classified under Andorran law as a crime against property.

The investigation had already been referred to the judicial authorities, and the arrest was carried out following instructions from the Batllia.

The case highlights concerns about financial abuse involving vulnerable elderly people, particularly those who rely on caregivers for everyday assistance.

Police investigations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
