Andorra Housing Union issues ultimatum to Government: border blockade in December and possible general strike in 2027
More than 100 people gather in Andorra la Vella to demand stronger tenant protections as housing campaigners threaten further protests
The Andorra Housing Union (Sindicat d'Habitatge) has warned that it could organise a major demonstration during the December public holiday period, potentially including a border blockade, if the Government fails to respond to its demands for stronger housing protections.
The announcement was made on Thursday, November 5, during a demonstration at Plaça de la Rotonda in Andorra la Vella, where more than 100 people gathered to protest against the country's housing crisis and demand greater protection for tenants.
Union spokesperson Rebeca Bonache explained that the organisation is giving the Government until the December holiday period to address its demands and propose solutions.
Otherwise, the group is prepared to escalate its campaign with a demonstration that could disrupt one of the main access routes into the Principality.
Border blockade threatened during December holiday weekend
The possibility of blocking the border is particularly significant because the December holiday period, which includes the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, is traditionally one of Andorra's busiest tourism periods.
The union sees the proposed demonstration as a way to increase pressure on the Government over the country's rental housing situation.
The protest has not yet been formally confirmed and will depend on the Government's response over the coming weeks.
Bonache stressed the need for measures to protect tenants and prevent access to housing from becoming increasingly difficult.
Thursday's demonstration also highlighted the union's intention to continue mobilising supporters beyond occasional public gatherings.
Housing Union considers general strike in 2027
Another possibility raised by the organisation is calling for a general strike in 2027 if the Government fails to introduce changes to its housing policies.
For now, this remains an option under consideration rather than a formally announced strike with a confirmed date.
Such a move would represent a significant escalation in the union's campaign against what it considers insufficient institutional responses to the difficulties faced by residents seeking affordable accommodation.
However, organising a general strike would require defining its conditions, securing support from other organisations and establishing the scale of the proposed action.
Political representatives attend the demonstration
The protest was also attended by representatives of several Andorran political parties.
Among those present were Núria Segués of Concòrdia; Pere Baró and Laia Moliné of the Social Democratic Party (PS); and Xavier Surana of Som Veïns.
The demonstration coincided with the third anniversary of the Andorra Housing Union, against a backdrop of ongoing debate over rental contract protections and the difficulty of finding affordable housing in the Principality.
December now represents the next potential turning point, when the union will decide whether to proceed with the proposed demonstration and possible border blockade based on the Government's response.
Meanwhile, the prospect of a general strike in 2027 remains on the table as another means of increasing pressure if the organisation's demands go unanswered.
