Diocese of Urgell launches investigation into priest accused of alleged sexual abuse

The Diocese of Urgell has launched a canonical investigation into a priest following a complaint alleging sexual abuse of a person who was over the age of 18 at the time of the alleged incidents. 

Church authorities confirmed on Sunday, November 8, that the internal investigation was initiated on October 17, after the priest named in the complaint had been formally identified.

According to an official statement issued by the diocese, the complaint was submitted through a formal written notification. Once the priest's identity had been established, the diocesan office responsible for handling sexual abuse allegations contacted the complainant and began the relevant procedures to establish the facts.

Investigation opened on October 17

The diocese stated that, on the same day the canonical proceedings were initiated, the complainant was informed of their right to pursue legal action before the competent judicial authorities.

Church officials emphasised that the complainant was encouraged to report the allegations to civil authorities and was offered comprehensive support throughout the process.

A canonical investigation is an internal procedure governed by Catholic Church law and does not constitute a criminal investigation.

The diocese has not confirmed whether the allegations have also been formally reported to the civil judicial authorities.

Priest's identity and possible precautionary measures remain undisclosed

The Diocese of Urgell has not released the identity of the priest under investigation or provided details about where or under what circumstances the alleged sexual abuse may have occurred.

The statement also makes no reference to any precautionary measures that may have been imposed on the priest while the investigation is ongoing.

Church authorities have stressed that the proceedings will respect the rights of everyone involved, including both the complainant and the priest facing the allegations.

Diocese pledges full cooperation with judicial authorities

In its official statement, the diocese expressed its firm commitment to cooperating fully with the administration of justice to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

The Diocese of Urgell also reaffirmed its commitment to preventing sexual abuse and ensuring safe environments within Catholic Church institutions.

The canonical investigation remains open, and no official conclusions regarding the allegations have been publicly announced.
