“In Andorra, they don’t serve you in Catalan—not in the city-centre shops, not at Júlia, not even in influencers’ venues”

Content creator Irina Carpio has questioned the presence of Catalan in Andorra in a video posted on social media. “They don’t speak Catalan,” she says, explaining that she expected to find a different language situation when she arrived in the country.

Carpio says she expected Catalan to be more widely used by businesses because it is the official language. In her experience, however, she struggled to find shops where staff would respond to her in Catalan, both in the city centre and at Perfumeria Júlia.

“Catalan is the official language, but it isn’t spoken”

The creator compares her impression with Barcelona, where she says she can still find businesses that serve her in Catalan. She also claims that speaking Catalan can draw disapproving looks in some venues frequented by influencers.

Her comments describe her personal experience and do not provide data on the use of Catalan in businesses across the country. In the video, Carpio asks viewers whether they have had similar experiences and concludes: “Catalan is the official language, but it isn’t spoken.”
