The Government of Andorra says that, so far, it has no information indicating that any Andorran citizens or residents of the Principality are among those affected by Wednesday’s train crash in Spain’s Toledo province.

The collision between a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo train has left at least 46 people dead, according to the latest reports, and many others injured. Spanish authorities have not ruled out a rise in the death toll as rescue operations continue.

Andorra’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country’s embassy in Madrid and its Consular Affairs Department are in contact with the Spanish authorities responsible for managing information about the victims and those affected.

Government provides two assistance phone numbers

Anyone needing information or consular assistance can contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on:

  • 875 704: Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • +376 324 292: Consular emergency line

Foreign Minister Imma Tor has publicly offered the Andorran Government’s condolences to the victims’ families and expressed the Principality’s solidarity with those affected and with the Spanish authorities.

“Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of today’s train crash in Toledo. We stand in solidarity with everyone affected and with the Government of Spain at this time of grief,” the minister said.

Cause of crash remains under investigation

The crash happened on Wednesday morning near the town of Urda, in Toledo, when an AVE train struck an Iryo train from behind. The collision caused two carriages to derail and fall down an embankment.

Initial investigations point to possible human error at the railway control centre, although the cause has not yet been officially determined.

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia remain suspended. Emergency crews are assisting the injured and continuing rescue operations.

Andorra’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue monitoring the situation to establish whether any Andorran citizens or residents are among those affected.
