Andorran women’s groups condemn suspected femicide on Comella road
Acció Feminista and the ADA have sent their condolences to the family of the 51-year-old woman
Women’s organisations in Andorra have condemned the death of a 51-year-old woman, allegedly at the hands of her partner, and sent their condolences to her family and those close to her.
Acció Feminista d’Andorra and the Associació de Dones d’Andorra (ADA) have described the case as a suspected femicide. The investigation is ongoing under judicial supervision.
Police have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of an offence against a person’s life. According to the information released, he went to a police station and said he had stabbed his partner. The woman’s body was found on Comella road.
Acció Feminista calls for respect for the victim and her family
Acció Feminista d’Andorra expressed “its sorrow and strongest condemnation of the murder” and placed the victim and those close to her at the centre of its statement. The organisation sent its condolences to the woman’s family and friends and offered them its support.
The group said that the death of a woman at the hands of her partner “is not an isolated incident or an inexplicable tragedy”, but a femicide—“the most extreme form of gender-based violence”. Naming it as such, the association added, is one way of doing justice to the victim’s memory.
Acció Feminista also called for respect for the woman and her family, and for media coverage that protects their dignity and privacy. It said it hoped the judicial investigation would establish the circumstances of the case.
The ADA calls for greater prevention of violence against women
The Associació de Dones d’Andorra condemned “this suspected femicide in the strongest possible terms” and expressed its support for the victim’s family and those close to her.
“Every woman who is murdered is a defeat for everyone working to prevent every form of violence against women,” the association said.
The ADA and Acció Feminista stressed that prevention and support protocols are essential, but said they are not enough on their own. They called for continued efforts to ensure that no woman has to live in fear and that every woman knows where to turn and whom to ask for help.
“Today, Andorra is in mourning. No woman should lose her life for being a woman,” Acció Feminista said, adding that it would continue working alongside women.
